Company History

Orthopedic Institute, an independent physician group specializing in orthopedics, was founded in 1972 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The group has steadily grown in size and scope, today with 13 physicians and over 150 employees. An important milestone in OI's growth was the new building, completed in 2001.

Today, Orthopedic Institute is the largest orthopedic specialty group in the region. In addition to general orthopedics, areas of focus include the Spine Center, Sports Medicine Center, Lower Extremity Center, Joint Center and the Upper Extremity Center. The group also specializes in joint replacement, foot and ankle and pediatrics, and offers physical medicine.

Orthopedic Institute Clinics are located in Brookings, Mitchell and Yankton, in addition to Sioux Falls. Outreach is provided by the physicians of Orthopedic Institute to Dell Rapids, Flandreau, Freeman, Huron, Madison, and Vermillion, SD; Marshall, MN; and Rock Rapids, Rock Valley and Sibley, IA.

Orthopedic Institute brings together all the right elements to help you on your road to recovery. From the highly trained physicians, to the most advanced treatment options such as arthroscopic surgery and microsurgery, to state-of-the-art facilities, to the excellent staff -- Orthopedic Institute is committed to your care.

Orthopedic Institute physicians already see a variety of complex cases from across the region. Orthopedic Institute emphasizes a non-surgical approach to back pain, recognizing that in most cases spine surgery should be the last card to be played after non-surgical options have been tried. About 3/4 of the patients are referred to Orthopedic Institute by other doctors in the South Dakota region. Orthopedic Institute also cares for those who injure themselves at the workplace. We recognize that the injured worker and the employer both want a fast recovery and a quick return to work. We are sensitive to the needs and feedback related to work comp patients.
