Founded in 1921 as a teachers' college, Adams State is a university offering undergraduate majors, minors and emphases. ASU also offers master's degree programs and a doctoral program – most offered online. New academic programs are developed to address student and societal need.
Adams State University is an NCAA Division II school in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC). 21 teams are supported by ASU. 8 of those teams have been added in the last 3-4 years. The athletic department is large and continues to go through changes, whether it is adding teams or facilities or upgrading facilities. It is the second highest school in the nation at 7,544 ft above sea level. Alamosa is located in the San Luis Valley of southern Colorado about 3-4 hours from Denver, Colorado Springs, Santa Fe and Albuquerque. 14,000 foot mountain peaks surround the valley. The Rio Grande River flows on the edge of town through the middle of the valley. There are plenty of outdoor activities available for all seasons, with camping, hiking, mountain bike riding, and skiing/snowboarding all within an hours drive.
