BASIC FUNCTION: The Associate Director of Athletics for Sports Medicine is responsible for working directly with the University’s Team Physician(s) to supervise the prevention, care, treatment, and rehabilitation of injuries to Hofstra University Student-Athletes. This position will manage and supervise the daily collaboration with Northwell Health our medical team partner, the athletic training staff, athletic training students, the facilities, and report to the AVP and COO for Athletics. The Associate Director of Athletics for Sports Medicine may receive direction from the Coordinators of the Athletic Training Education Program or the Chair of PESP related to classroom/clinical instruction, clinical supervision, and clinical evaluation of athletic training students.
Specific responsibilities of the position fall into several categories including direct medical care, supervisory/administrative tasks for the Hofstra Department of Athletics, liaison responsibilities with outside departments and agencies such as the NCAA/CAA, including the Athletic training education program and University Requirements.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Medical Care:
- Implements and supervises the prevention, care, treatment, rehabilitation and recovery of injuries and illnesses to student-athletes.
- Travels with team assignment as assigned by the AVP for Athletics.
- Provides medical coverage for all practices and games for assigned sports.
- Provides and supervises emergency treatment of injuries or illnesses to University student-athletes, including the use of emergency equipment and supplies and the removal from the playing field/court.
- Assists the physical therapists and strength and conditioning coaches with physical therapy sessions for student-athletes.
- Coordinates the drug testing in accordance with the Health and Safety Program and under the direction of the University team physician.
- Ensures that there is coordination with the University Student Wellness Center for scheduling student-athlete preseason physicals.
- Communicates injury and illness status to appropriate coach(es).
- Maintains office hours sufficient to cover the needs of assigned team and consistent with Athletic Department personnel.
Supervisory/Administrative tasks:
- Coordinate and manage on site medical services and physical therapy agreements.
- Serves as the coordinator of the University Athletic Department Health and safety Program.
- Leads our COVID procedure implementation and compliance based off guidelines set forth by the state, university and NCAA.
- Ensures compliance for the University and NCAA drug testing programs.
- Serves on or appoints representation to serve on various committees or programs, including but not limited to: representation at the annual CAA Sports
- Medicine meetings, University OSHA committee and University PAD program.
- Maintain compliance involving all areas related to NYS Department of Health, the CDC, and OSHA.
- Coordinates student-athlete visits for on-campus physician clinics.
- Supervises maintenance of the athletic training room and its equipment.
- Exercises oversight of the athletic training budgets.
- Advises student-athletes and coaches on athletic training habits and procedures.
- Supervises and instructs Assistant Athletic Trainers and Athletic Training Students on University policies and procedures.
- Supervises athletic training staff on athletic training methods and procedures
- Schedules the athletic training staff to provide appropriate medical coverage for University practices and events.
- Assists student-athletes to arrange for transportation to and from physician appointments as needed.
- Files and follows-up on all insurance claim forms relating to athletic related injuries and/or illnesses
- Ensures staff AED/CPR certification and compliance on an annual basis.
Liaison responsibilities:
- Serves as liaison with the University Student Health and Counseling center and team physicians regarding the student-athlete heath care.
- Liaison to outside physicians, physical therapists and other health care professionals regarding student-athlete health care.
- Serves as liaison to University’s insurance company.
Athletic Training Education Program:
- May act as a Clinical Instructor/preceptor for the Students within the Athletic Training Education Program.
- Evaluates the clinical experiences of students in the Athletic Training Education Program.
University and Athletic Department Requirements:
- Complies with the policies and procedures set forth by Hofstra University, the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA), the NCAA and other governing bodies.
- Complies with the Standards of Membership and Code of Ethics set forth by the NATA.
- Maintains the appropriate professional CEU’s, including a minimal of 10 Evidence Based Practice (EBP) hours annually, as delineated by the NATA.
- Maintains certification in first aid and AED/CPR as delineated by the NATA.
- Responsible for knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations. If found responsible for a violation of NCAA regulations, will be subject to disciplinary or corrective action, including termination if appropriate. Also may be responsible for any act or omission that may give rise to a finding that the University has violated an NCAA regulation.
- Position requires long periods of standing and working in inclement weather.
- Performs other duties not specifically stated above as assigned by the Director of Athletics.
Requirements
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s Degree
- Candidate must have NATABOC Certification, New York State License or eligible, CPR and AED Certification
- Valid driver's license.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master’s Degree in Athletic Training
- 5+ years of collegiate athletic training experience
